Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort and Spa Celebrated Earth Day 2021 with a massive program line-up. Our joint partners: Sustainable Development Council Sri Lanka (SDGSL), Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), Earth Lanka Youth Network, Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), Dehigahalanda School Ambalantota, Ocean Solutions Microgrants, Turtle Island Restoration Network and Arinma Holdings united together this Earth Day. The theme “Restore Our Earth” of Earth Day 2021 was given attention to the combined effort. Environment Poineers of Resort EMBRACE Partner (Dehigahalanda School) was targeted in the awareness spreading, while they were educated on conservation of nature. Resort also launched its Marine refuge tank during the program, providing life to species that get entangled in local fishing nets. This ex-situ program would provide shelter for refuge biota in time to come.
The program also facilitated a tree planting event at the forest establishment within the resort, while staff members and participants took part in. This was a great way to nurture the environment pioneers that are willing to take over the future.
Following the tree planting, the members joined in a reef cleaning activity along the resort monitored coral reef. Nearly 57kilos of ghost nets were removed and sent for disposing. It was a great achievement to commemorate and a great way to restore our
